2 CORINTHIANS 4:18

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal…

The country hit by Carrie Underwood Temporary Home indicates what this verse is saying. Look at the chorus if you will: Temporary Home, it’s not where I belong. Windows in rooms that I’m passing through. This was just a stop on the way to where I’m going, I’m not afraid because I know, This was my temporary home.

This verse causes me to wonder in my mind if I get caught up in the things of this world a little too much and lose sight of the purpose God has set before me. Now I’m also not saying that I should just sit back and not take care of things that need to be taken care of either. But I am saying where is my focus? I have to look at , am I focusing on the things in my life like they are a permanent fixture in my life and that my life here on earth is all there is.

Here’s what I believe this verse is saying: To the Christian the experiences and circumstances of this present life, often painful and perplexing are what is visible. We live in a fallen evil age therefore these experiences are temporary and fleeting. To fix our eyes on these things can be the cause of us to lose heart.

The unseen realities which are no less real are eternal.

So this brings us to the question: What do we fix our eyes on?? Things Heavenward and Christ my friends, things Heavenward and Jesus our Savior… Here is what Philppians and Hebrews say about this…

Philippians 3:18-21

18. For, as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is their shame. Their mind is on earthy things. 20. But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ..

Hebrews 12:2-3

  1. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  3. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

We live in very trying times to say the least. Things coming at us, circumstances always changing, not always working out. Instead of fixing our eyes on all these things to the point of discouragement and loosing heart. Lets start with Christ and fix our eyes on Him who is truly the author and perfecter of our faith. Lets focus on our home in heaven and things heavenward. Fulfilling the call that God has placed on your life, and lets get involved in Gods plan as He allows us the opportunity to minister to one another. This is truly our Temporary Home…. God Bless You All!

I appreciate your perspective on this.
It is tempting to dive headfirst into temporal issues as though they are of primary importance. And, it can be equally tempting to overcorrect by completely withdrawing from earthly interactions.
Keeping Christ and eternity in focus is so important in the believer’s day to day experience.
